Video-test: Gore-tex Shakedry

Tired of having to choose between comfort and protection?

Garments made with GORE-TEX® Active fabric are designed for aerobic activities. The brand’s lightest and most breathable products, these garments can be worn during activities like running or cycling when a waterproof and breathable outdoor jacket would cause the wearer to overheat.

But breathability is traded for durability: these are specific garments unable to withstand the demands of the alpine athlete.

Gore-Tex takes this proposal one step further this year with the Shakedry system, which eliminates the “outer face” materials. In the video we showcase the One Gore-Tex Active Run Jacket by Gore Running Wear.

Gore-Tex material is something like a sandwich: an inner layer that comes into contact with the body, a middle membrane, and an outer protective layer that enhances the garment’s durability.

Eliminating the outer layer makes the garment lighter and significantly enhances breathability, making it possible to create garments that can truly be used in conditions that used to make certain activities impossible, similar to the way a windbreaker is used for running, for example.

But enhanced breathability means less durability. For example, this type of fabric is not recommended for use with backpacks; the straps could rub and damage the garment.

The outer membrane is treated with Gore-Tex’s Shakedry technology. The name says it all: this treatment makes it possible to dry the garment with a few simple shakes. A truly effective system.

This prevents the chilling effect that results from touching wet surfaces; rain won’t weigh down the garment and it can be immediately dried and stored after use, attractive features for runners and cyclists.

It is a very effective system...for the conditions for which it is designed. It is guaranteed to please runners and cyclists, but it is not recommended for mountain climbing and trekking with friction-causing backpacks.
