In 1914, the English adventurer Frank Wild, along with the famous polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and 26 other men, set sail for the ultimate journey, across Antarctica. But their ship, the Endurance, was trapped before they had reached the point from which the expedition was to depart.

They went north for nine months until their hull could not withstand the pressure of the ice. In three lifeboats, they managed to reach a tiny island where they would never have been able to find them, because not even the whalers knew the place, while Europe was mired in the First World War.
